Police officials have detained an inspector of police in connection with the Rs 15 crore gold heist at a Fedbank Arumbakkam branch in Chennai. Officials have also seized 3.5 kilograms of stolen gold from his house at Acharapakkam in Chengalpet district.
The detained official has been identified as Amalraj, an inspector of police attached with theAcharapakkam police station.
The detention has been made based on the confession of Santhosh and Balaji, who was arrested in connection with the gold heist at Fedbank.
The fifth metropolitan magistrate court in Egmore on Wednesday sent Santhosh and Balaji to five days’ police custody. Police had already recovered 28kg of gold from the suspects.
During questioning, Santhosh revealed that he had hidden the remaining portion of the stolen gold at Amalraj’s house and that he is a relative of inspector Amalraj.
Investigations to find out the inspector’s role in the heist is underway.
