With the counting of votes for the recently-held presidential election commenced at the parliament on Thursday, the country would know its 15th president later that day. In the presidential election that took place on Monday, Droupadi Murmu contested on behalf of National Democratic Alliance (NAD), the opposition parties had nominated Yashwant Sinha.
In the election, Murmu seems to have a clear edge over her opponent. If elected, Murmu would become the first tribal woman to become the first citizen of the country.
Of 4,796 electors including 771 MPs and 4,025 MLAs, 99% - 763 MPs and 3991 MLAs - of them had casted their votes in the election.
The votes are being counted at room number 63 of the parliament building under the supervision of Rajya Sabha secretary general PC Mody. The counting process started in the morning and the authorities have been counting the votes of MPs before counting the votes of MLAs. The newly elected president would be taking oath on July 25. Political analysts predicted that Murmu would win the election.
