It is reported that the Government is considering a new plan to sell groceries in ration shops in Tamil Nadu on par with supermarkets. With this in focus the Government has started paying serious attention to the modernization of ration shops. Mr. R. Chakrapani, Minister for Food and Civil Supplies and Dr. J. Radhakrishnan,Principal Secretary Cooperation, Food and consumer protection , are holding regular consultation meetings in this regard.
There are 35,323 fair price shops (Ration Shops) operating in Tamil Nadu out of which 10,279 shops are part-time shops. The DMK Government, which has introduced many drastic changes in the ration shops, is planning to take it to the next level and is planning to start a scheme to sell Grocery items in packets in Ration Shops like mini supermarkets on a trial basis.
It seems that the Government will take the next steps, including expanding it, depending on the patronage it gets among the people. Commodities such as rice, wheat, sugar, palm oil, kerosene, etc. are generally distributed in ration shops. Only a few shops sell some products including TANTEA tea powder and table salt.
It seems that only 20 shops per district will be selected in the initial phase and the Grocery sales program may be started there. As a result, the Food Safety Department officials are working to identify specific fair price shops where Grocery items can be sold.
At the time of his appointment, as Principal Secretary of Cooperation , Food and Consumer protection there was an expectation that Dr. J. Radhakrishnan would definitely introduce an innovative changes in this field. To make this happen, many drastic changes have started happening in the food security and cooperative sector.
Let's get ready to consume good products that benefits the people!
