Salem Collector urges students to prioritize mental health

In a mental health awareness event held today at Salem Government Arts and Science College, District Collector Dr. R. Brindha Devi, urged students to focus on maintaining their mental well-being through positive thinking, sports, and open communication. The event, part of World Mental Health Day celebrations, emphasized the importance of early intervention and support to address mental health challenges among students. Speaking at the event, Dr. Brindha Devi highlighted that World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, aims to raise awareness about mental health issues and encourage proactive measures for mental well-being. She stressed that students should actively seek mental health counselling and support services when facing negative thoughts or emotional difficulties. The Collector also advised students to build resilience by developing problem-solving skills and making positive decisions. “Sharing worries with a trusted friend or family member can significantly reduce mental stress. Focusing on positive aspects of life can help keep negative thoughts at bay,” she added. She also emphasized the role of sports and physical activity in enhancing both mental and physical health.
Other officials present at the event included Dr. P. Radhika, Joint Director (Medical Welfare Services), Dr. S. Soundammal, Deputy Director (Health Services), Dr. K.S. Vivekanandan, District Mental Health Program Officer, and Dr. N. Shenbagalakshmi, Principal of Salem Government Arts College. Several faculty members and students actively participated in the awareness program, underscoring the importance of mental health education within the student community.
