Salem Dt gears up for Northeast Monsoon preparedness with minister-led review

Under the leadership of Tourism Minister Mr. R. Rajendran, a comprehensive review meeting was held at the District Collectorate today to assess the Northeast Monsoon preparedness in various parts of the Salem Corporation and district.
Government officials from multiple departments participated in the meeting, which aimed to ensure that the district is fully prepared to handle potential challenges posed by the impending monsoon.
The Minister conducted a field inspection of Salem Corporation’s key areas to oversee the pre-monsoon efforts. During the review, he stressed the importance of ensuring that water bodies and drainage canals remain free from encroachments and debris.
Officials were instructed to continuously monitor water inflows and outflows in major water bodies such as Mookaneri, Allikuttai, Bodinayakanpatti, Pallappatti, and Selathampatti lakes, which are critical for flood management in the region.
Additionally, Minister Rajendran emphasized the need for constant monitoring of the local bodies and reservoirs controlled by the Water Resources Department across the district. Officials were advised to keep sandbags ready and to install warning boards near deep water areas as a safety measure. Schools were also instructed to ensure safe electrical connections, clean drinking water, and educate students on do’s and don’ts during the rainy season.
Public health officials were urged to continue conducting fever prevention camps in vulnerable areas to prevent monsoon-related illnesses. Chlorination of drinking water sources was also highlighted as a priority, and special teams were assigned to oversee this process. The Minister also directed revenue officials to ensure that flood control rooms at taluk and revenue offices operate 24/7 with proper staffing.
Regarding road infrastructure, Minister Rajendran called on Highways Department officials to monitor roads and ensure that they are pothole-free. Rescue equipment must be kept on standby for emergencies, and the public was reminded to call the toll-free number 1077 or contact the District Control Room at 0427-2452202 for any assistance related to monsoon impacts.
The review meeting saw participation from District Collector Dr. R. Brindha Devi, Corporation Mayor Mr. A. Ramachandran, City Police Commissioner Mr. Praveen Kumar Abinapu, and other key officials from various government departments.
