In 2020, Jayaraj, a businessman from Sathankulam in Thoothukudi district, and his son Pennix were taken for questioning by the police and severely beaten, resulting in both of them suffered with serious injuries and died one after the other.
The CBI registered a case regarding this double murder and arrested 9 policemen including the then Sathankulam Inspector Sridhar, Sub Inspectors Raghu Ganesh and Balakrishnan and lodged them in the Madurai Central Jail. The trial of this case, which is being heard in the Madurai District First Additional Sessions Court, is almost over and the verdict is awaited.
In this situation, when the case came before Judge Muthukumaran yesterday for hearing, a petition was filed on behalf of Inspector Sridhar stating that he wanted to become a government witness (approver). The judge, who registered this, ordered the CBI to respond to this petition and adjourned the hearing.
"In this case, where the trial is about to conclude and the verdict is being delivered, the fact that Inspector Sridhar, the first accused, has filed a petition to become a government witness raises suspicion that it is intended to divert the direction of the case and delay it. Lawyers have also registered this opinion."
The murder of a father and son in Sathankulam shocked the entire country. The verdict in the Anna University student case came in five and a half months. But, no verdict came even after 5 years in this case.
Even though Inspector Sridhar says that he is turning into a government witness after many years, everyone's expectation is that the verdict in this case should be delivered very quickly.
