Shri Amrit Lal Meena, Secretary of the Government of India, Ministry of Coal, addressed a stakeholders meeting on Make in India initiatives for Mining Machineries in Chennai. The initiative aims to encourage Indian and overseas manufacturers to develop, manufacture, and assemble products made in India, incentivizing dedicated investments into manufacturing. The policy approach focuses on creating a conducive environment for investments, developing modern infrastructure, and opening up new sectors for foreign capital. The initiative targets 25 economic sectors for job creation and skill enhancement, aiming to transform India into a global design and manufacturing export hub.
The Secretary also highlighted the pivotal role of the coal industry in supporting the Make in India campaign, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure development, technological innovation, and investment opportunities within the coal sector. He emphasized the need for collaboration between public and private stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth and energy security for the nation.
CIL still relies on imports of high capacity HEMM, with an average annual import of approximately Rs. 750 Crores. Coal India Limited is placing trial orders to encourage manufacturers to develop these equipment in India, with results encouraging. The Secretary announced plans to phase down imports gradually over the next few years to make the vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat a reality.
