Justice Bharata Chakravarty, during a bail hearing at the Madurai High Court, questioned whether the practice of isolating first-time inmates in Madurai Central Jail. The judge emphasized the need for separate jails for first-time offenders, especially students to prevent their association with hardened criminals, noting that young offenders often get involved in serious crimes after jail exposure.
Imprisonment is to prevent crimes from happening and criminals to repent. This has been the canon since olden times. There can be no doubt that first-time offenders, especially youths, should be given a chance to reform. Justice Bharata Chakraborty's comments are welcome. Not only that, it also needs immediate consideration by the government.
Let a separate jail for first-time jail goers be set up soon & that too in Tamil Nadu as a model for other states!
