Special Act sought against honour killing at Erode

Special Act sought against honour killing at Erode

The functionaries of Tamil Puligal Katchi led by its state general secretary and central district secretary Sindhanaiselvan staged a demonstration at Erode on Monday seeking special Act to prevent honour killings in the state.

They cited the murder of Alagendran (Arunthathiyar) of Kovilangulam in Virudhunagar district at Kallikudi in Madurai district a few days back for having love affair with a girl of another caste (Devendrakula Velalar). Though both of them were SCs, her uncle invited him to arrange marriage, severed his head and killed in broad daylight in the Madurai city. The police arrested him and after a stir arrested 4 persons acted as paid killers.

Gokulraj, Sankar and Varshanupriya etc  were murdered in recent past in similar manner. On an average, over 30 persons were murdered in this way every year. CPM office in Nellai was attacked for solemnising intercaste marriage recently. Mostly dalits were affected in the issue. So, we sought special Act to check murders related to inter caste love affairs and marriages. But, the CM, in the assemby, said that the present IPC was enough to punish the guilty.

If the special Act was passed, the cases would be thoroughly investigated and guilty would be speedily punished by arranging a special court like Pocso Act, they said.

Party functionaries Thiruvalavan, Vengai Ponnusamy, Velliangiri, Balasubramani and P Naveenkumar attended the stir.
