Ten fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly fishing near Neduntheevu. The two boats they were traveling in have also been seized.
The arrest of these fishermen has caused shock and concern. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry fishermen are frequently arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, and their boats, fish, fishing equipment, and other belongings are confiscated. They also face long prison sentences and heavy fines.
Currently, more than 110 Tamil Nadu fishermen are languishing in Sri Lankan jails due to these repeated arrests, leaving their families in deep distress.
Whenever fishermen are arrested, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin immediately writes to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Last month, Members of Parliament from the DMK and its allies staged a protest in the Parliament complex, condemning these arrests and urging the central government to take immediate action for their
release.
In this situation, 10 more fishermen were arrested today for allegedly crossing the border while fishing near Neduntheevu. Their two boats have also been seized.
Just two days ago, three fishermen from the Rameswaram area were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.
