Sterlite’s closure: SC’s justice for Thoothukudi residents

Sterlite’s closure: SC’s justice for Thoothukudi residents

When demonstrators in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, demanded the shutdown of the Sterlite factory, the police opened fire. This resulted in the deaths of 13 persons. Numerous people suffered injuries.
The Tamil Nadu government then decided to close the Sterlite facility as a matter of policy. Vedanta had filed an appeal to get the shuttered plant reopened with the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Chandrachud presided over the case's hearing. During the trial, the Supreme Court harshly criticized Vedanta.
"The health and welfare of the people of Thoothukudi should be protected. Although the common people cannot come directly to the court, their concerns cannot be ignored.
At the same time, the court cannot ignore the objections and doubts of the Tamil Nadu government.
The High Court order denying permission to open the Sterlite plant cannot be said to be wrong. The sealing of the plant is right. Protecting the environment is one of the important jobs of the state government," the Supreme Court observed, quite emphatically.
The Supreme Court panel led by the Chief Justice has decided that the Sterlite factory will not be allowed to restart. Tamil Nadu's populace is pleased and appreciative of this. This sound assessment is really appreciated.
Congratulations to the Tamil Nadu government for making compelling arguments and winning a unique ruling that provides comfort to the Thoothukudicommunity!
