Ahead of the Northeast monsoon season, flood prevention works has been intensified in the city and the Chief Minister MK Stalin has been inspecting the works in person on Saturday. As the city gears up for the Northeast monsoon which is expected to start a bit earlier than the usual, the Chief Minister has directed the concerned officials to speed up the construction of storm water drains so as to prevent untoward incidents during the monsoon.
This year, experts are predicting that the state would receive more rainfall than its average and the rains are expected to start from the month end. Wanting to finish the preparatory works before the commencement of monsoon, officials are speeding up the works. The state government has conducted several meetings to review the ongoing monsoon preparedness works including the construction of storm water drains and are expediting the works.
In Chennai, the state government has been constructing 179 kilometer long storm water drain at the cost of Rs 608 crore. The Chief Minister has inspected the construction works and canal desiltation works at Broadway NSC Bose road, Waltax road, Ashok Nagar, Kolathur Velavan Naga, Pulianthope highway, Basin bridge and near Rippon building and inquired about the status of the works before directing the officials to complete the works at the earliest. Ministers KN Nehru and Sekarbabu, MP Dayanidhi Maran, corporation mayor Priya and commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi were present during the inspection.
