Suspicious Husband Who Killed Newborn Gets Life Sentence

In a shocking case that has stirred the city, the Coimbatore Mahila Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man to life imprisonment for brutally killing his newborn daughter by throwing her from a moving train — a chilling act driven by baseless suspicion of his wife’s fidelity.
The convict, Mariselvam (30) of Pudukkudi near Tirunelveli, was married to Kavitha (22) from Kadayanallur. Soon after marriage, Mariselvam began doubting his wife’s character, which led to repeated quarrels and physical abuse.
He brought his pregnant wife to Coimbatore and stayed at a hostel in Ramanathapuram for a few days. After returning home, Kavitha gave birth to a baby girl — a moment that should have brought joy, but instead turned tragic when Mariselvam accused her of infidelity and denied paternity.
On May 13, 2022, the couple travelled from Tirunelveli to Coimbatore by train, intending to find work in the city.
As the train passed through the Dindigul Agricultural Estate area, Mariselvam suddenly snatched the newborn from Kavitha’s arms and threw the baby out of the moving train. When Kavitha screamed in horror, he locked her inside the train’s toilet to stop her from raising an alarm.
After reaching Coimbatore, he confined her in a Ramanathapuram hostel and continued to beat and torture her. When he stepped out, Kavitha used his mobile phone to call the police control room, revealing her ordeal and the murder of her baby.
Police officers rushed to the scene, broke open the room, rescued Kavitha, and arrested the accused. A special team from Ramanathapuram police station conducted a three-day search near the railway tracks, but the infant’s body was never found — believed to have been taken away by wild animals.
Despite this, the prosecution, led by Government Advocate P. Jisha, presented strong circumstantial and forensic evidence.
After a detailed trial, Judge Sundarraj of the Coimbatore Mahila Court (Ramanathapuram) found Mariselvam guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a fine of ₹2,000.
This case marks a rare first in Coimbatore, where a life sentence was delivered despite the absence of the victim’s body, highlighting the thorough investigation and the strength of the prosecution’s evidence.
