Tamil Nadu notifies a sanctuary for slender lorises

Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday notified a special sanctuary for slender loris covering about 11,806 hectares in Karur and Dindigul districts. This is the first of its kind in the country. The Kavadvur slender loris sanctuary would be spread across Vedasandur, Dindigul East and Natham areas in Dindigul and Kavadvur in Karur district.

Slender loris is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The species spend most of their life on trees and its survival rate highly depends on its habitat improvement, mitigation of threats and conservation of its places.  The state government, in early April, announced the Legislative Assembly about its decision to establish the sanctuary for slender loris and now, it has notified the sanctuary under section 26 (A)(1)(b) of Wildlife (protection) Act, 1972.
