The School Education Department has launched a 100-day challenge to ensure that all students from 1st to 5th standard in government and government-aided primary and middle schools in Tamil Nadu develop Tamil and English reading and learning skills.
During an inspection of all 234 assembly constituencies, School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was invited by Valarmathi, the headmistress of Anekolu Panchayat Union Primary School in the Thali assembly constituency. She proudly stated that her students were proficient in Tamil and English reading and had mastered basic mathematics skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. She urged the minister to visit their school for an inspection.
Accepting the invitation, the minister visited the school and was amazed by the students' academic performance. Impressed by their skills, he encouraged other schools to invite inspections as well.
Following this, 4,552 schools extended invitations in November 2024. In response, the Education Department introduced the 100-day challenge, instructing schools to enhance students' basic skills in Tamil, English reading, and mathematics. The challenge is set to be publicly implemented in the first or second week of April.
To ensure its success, the Education Department has provided clear guidelines to the participating schools. The challenge will be conducted in the presence of District Collectors, District Education Officers, Panchayat Council members, People's Council representatives, School Management Committees, and Parent-Teacher Associations.
Other schools across Tamil Nadu are also encouraged to focus on improving students' learning abilities. Teachers should take up this initiative with enthusiasm, as special attention to foundational skills will undoubtedly enhance students' learning abilities and boost enrollment in government schools.
