Tiruvannamalai District Collector D Bhaskara Pandian recently inspected the construction of houses under the "Kalaignar Kanavu Illam" project in the Thandarampattu Panchayat Union as part of the "Niranthathu Manam" program.
The initiative aims to replace slum dwellings with permanent houses, in line with the Tamil Nadu government's vision of creating a slum-free state by 2030.
During the inspection, the District Collector emphasised that the project was launched to provide permanent housing for homeless citizens, reducing the number of slum dwellers in the state.
The Kalaignar Kanavu Illam project, which began in 1975, aims to construct eight lakh houses across rural Tamil Nadu by 2030, with an allocation of ₹3,500 crore.
In the first phase of the project, which will run from 2024-2025, one lakh new houses are to be built at a cost of ₹3.10 lakh each. In Tiruvannamalai district, ₹148 crore has been allocated to build 4,800 houses, with 831 homes earmarked for the Thandarampattu Panchayat Union. Work is already underway on 152 houses, with the district administration pushing for swift completion.
During his visit, the District Collector also inspected houses under the PM-Janman project in Radhapuram panchayat, urging beneficiaries to complete roof-level work before the monsoon.
He instructed officials to monitor progress closely and ensure quality construction.
Additionally, the collector visited a well under the 15th Finance Committee grant scheme in Kilivanakambadi Panchayat, where he instructed officials to ensure it is cleaned and provides safe drinking water to the public.
At the Government Boys High School canteen in Thandarampattu, he tested the quality of food served to students, instructing staff to maintain high standards.
Finally, he reviewed the construction of a bridge in Reddiyarpalayam panchayat under the PMGSY scheme, with a budget of ₹4.71 crore, urging for its timely completion.
Dr. Mani, Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency, along with other government officials, accompanied him during the inspections.
