The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) has released 19 new crop varieties tailored for different agro-climatic regions across the state, aiming to enhance productivity and farm income. This initiative continues TNAU’s legacy of agricultural innovation, having introduced 929 crop varieties over the past century, many of which are cultivated nationwide and even globally.
In the category of agricultural crops, TNAU introduced three new rice varieties, including a semi-dwarf drought-tolerant variety and two medium slender grain varieties. Additionally, a new hybrid maize variety, a black gram variety suited for irrigated and rice fallow conditions, a drought-resistant groundnut variety, and a semi-dwarf castor hybrid were developed.
Among horticultural crops, four new vegetable varieties were introduced, including a tomato variety with extended shelf life, a bhendi hybrid, a chilli variety suited for industrial processing, and a compact-fruited ash gourd variety. The fruit crop segment saw the introduction of a non-lodging dwarf mutant banana variety, ‘Kaveri Vaaman,’ developed by ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana, Trichy, alongside new avocado and acid lime varieties. Additionally, TNAU released one flower crop, one spice crop, and a medicinal crop variety, Sirukurinjan, as well as a new coconut variety. A mushroom variety with an improved shelf life was also introduced.
