After the US President Donald Trump assumed office for the second term, various privileges of foreigners living in the US are being snatched away. One among them is the mass deportation of illegal immigrants. Amid the ongoing deportation, Trump calls for a 15% cap on admission of foreign students in Harvard university. Last month, he even froze 2.2 billion USD in federal funding to the university. The university has publicly expressed its displeasure, and the court has banned the order.
Subsequently, the US government has taken another weapon to prevent admission of international students in its varsities. The US embassy has warned of cancelling the visas of foreign students upon discontinuing their education without providing correct information to their educational institutions.
The move will severely affect Indians. Because the US has been the main attraction for students who want to pursue higher education in reputed institutions. Also, since the US universities provide scholarships and monthly allowances to take care of themselves in the foreign places, it is one of the priority places for students. More than two lakh students have gone to the US in the last year alone.
In contrast, various other countries have been welcoming international students to their universities, and have been offering scholarships and other allowances. To attract more students, they have also been organizing camps and spot enrollment in countries like India. Trump’s attempt to snatch away the accessibility to reputed institutions from international students seems unfair.
Trump has already started waging trade war by raising taxes on all foreign goods. In turn, it has disrupted the global economy, and became the major cause of economic slowdown in several countries. Now, his recent orders seem to be harming international students.
The US government has also intensified its measures to deport outsiders by cancelling their visas without prior notices. It in turn has put students under severe distress.
Because of the bossy attitude of Trump, he has also been witnessing a severe wave of opposition not just within the US, but also across the globe. Countries have started looking for alternatives to the US, since the US has been constantly tarnishing the interests of others under the disguise of protecting the interests of the US citizens. The globe has started to look for an alternative to the dollar.
The US may be the superpower. It may have all the pride and the power. But without the wisdom to move in harmony with other countries, success will continue to remain out of reach. When is Trump going to understand that?
