Even a single vote has the power to change the entire politics. There are many examples of that in the world. That is why voters have always been powerful. In some countries, fines are even imposed on those who do not vote. In this situation, some of the actions taken by the Election Commission in the state of Bihar have created controversy.
The state is set to hold assembly elections later this year. In view of this, the Election Commission has announced that it will undertake a special intensive voter list revision exercise in Bihar. This announcement has now become a hot topic of discussion across the country.
For this, the Election Commission has listed a total of 11 documents to be shown as their identity card. These include passport, caste certificate, birth certificate, identity card for central and state government employees, etc. But most importantly, it has been stated that Aadhaar and existing voter ID cards will not be accepted. This has created a big problem.
In present-day India, Aadhaar is the main identity card of the majority of the people. It is being given as proof for everything. Therefore, everyone is forced to take out the Aadhaar card. In such a situation, the stand that it will not be accepted is not only controversial but also painful. Is this the fate of Aadhaar, which was praised as ``Aha, Oho''? This is a challenge to the administration of the Union Government itself.
The Election Commission's blunder has left countless voters unable to cast their votes. More than two crore voters from marginalized communities like Muslims, Scheduled Castes and migrant workers are at risk of being removed from the voter list due to stringent documentation requirements of the Special Electoral Roll Revision, which means they often lack valid identity or residence proof.
Due to the strictness of the Election Commission, they have been forced to lose their voting rights. The India alliance parties allege that this is favorable to the ruling party. That is why, Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi, former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, CPI's D Raja, and CPM's Dipankar Bhattacharya jointly held a rally in Patna yesterday against the Election Commission for carrying out special intensive voter list revision work. RJD and Maha Alliance supporters disrupted road and rail traffic across Bihar. Rahul Gandhi alleged that an attempt similar to what the Election Commission did in Maharashtra is being made in Bihar.
However, the BJP has denied this. The Election Commission also justifies the special amendment scheme for the electoral roll.
Above all, not a single genuine citizen of India should be affected by the special revision of the electoral roll. The priority is to ensure that. As important as it is that the ineligible should not be deprived of the right to vote, it is even more important that the sons of the rightful soil should not be deprived of their right to vote.
This action by the Election Commission should not end up benefiting the politics of any one party!
