Water released from Kuppanatham dam for irrigation

The state legislative assembly’s deputy speaker K Pitchandi on Saturday released water from the Kuppanatham reservoir near Chengam in the district for irrigation purposes.
Collector K Tharpagaraj, Tiruvannamalai MP CN Annadurai, MLAs Giri, and Saravanan, state athletics association vice-president Kamban, and other officials attended the event.


Speaking at the event, the deputy speaker said that based on the directions of the Chief Minister, water is being released from the Kuppanatham dam for irrigation purposes.
At present, the water level of the dam is at its full capacity of 59.04 feet and the water reserve is 700 TMC. While 106.92 TMC of water has been allocated for drinking water and other needs, the remaining 593.08 TMC of water will be used for irrigation.


“Accordingly, 240 TMC of water will be released from the dam for 28 days till May 3. The move is expected to fill 47 lakes in 
Chengam, and benefit 9,432.76 acres of irrigation land. Thus, a total of 580.61 TMC of water is being released in one installment,” he added.
He urged the farmers to use this irrigation water economically and cooperate in farming as per the 
instructions of the department officials and get good yields.


Tiruvannamalai RDO Raj Kumar, water resource department’s executive engineer Arivazhagan, assistant executive engineers Sivakumar, Hariharan, and others attended the event.
