Watermelon sales gears up in Coimbatore

With the temperature touching 34 degrees Celsius in the last few days, watermelon sales have geared up in the city. While close to one ton of watermelons are sold in wholesale markets in a day, watermelon stalls have sprouted across the district. About 50 such stalls are set up in the city. The fruit is being brought to the city from other districts including Bengaluru, Tindivanum and Villupuram for both wholesale and retail businesses. 
A trader said that the wholesale price of the fruit is Rs 20 per kg and its retail price is Rs 25 per kg. Many are preferring to purchase the fruit in bulk, and wholesale shops sell at least one ton every day, he added.
