The union government has put up about 1.36 lakh square kilometers of areas in 28 places including four deep-sea zones of Tamil Nadu, across the country for oil and gas extraction. Of these, permission has been granted to extract oil and gas at three offshore blocks near Kanyakumari and one offshore block near Chennai.
The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has won the bidding in which private sector companies including Vedanta had competed. ONGC is likely to carry out the works in 32,485 square kilometers in four blocks in the state.
Fishermen community and marine experts have been opposing the project, stating that it will severely affect the marine line. But the union government has turned deaf ears and allowed ONGC to extract oil and gas.
Meanwhile, demands for the state government’s intervention in protecting the environment and livelihood of fishermen have also been rising across the state. Though it is imperative to increase the country’s energy production, equal importance should be given to protect the environment, marine life and the livelihood of fishermen. How fair is it to put them at risk?
Has the union government issued any announcement regarding the protection of marine resources? Will they assure that the oil and gas extraction will not affect marine life? If not, then it shouldn't be carried out in the first place. It is completely unfair to grant permission to do something that affects the environment, marine life and livelihood of fishermen. It is highly condemnable, and the permission granted to the ONGC should be revoked immediately.
The state government, until now, remains to be a mute spectator, without revealing its thoughts. But it's high time the state government should list the consequences of the project, and register its strong opposition with statistics. The government should put pressure on the union government, and stop the implementation of the project.
