Women can achieve anything in life if they possess self-confidence and mental strength, said Thoothukudi Mayor Jagan Periyasamy while addressing the International Women’s Day celebrations organised by the Thoothukudi City Municipal Corporation.
The event was held under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Priyanka. Assistant Engineer Anusoundarya delivered the welcome address.
Mayor Jagan Periyasamy distributed prizes to women who excelled in various competitions conducted as part of the celebrations.
In his address, the Mayor said that 32 women councillors are currently serving in the corporation and are efficiently carrying out their responsibilities on par with men.
He noted that surveillance cameras have been installed at several locations across the city to ensure women’s safety.
Referring to last year’s midnight Christmas vehicle rally, he said many women travelled safely on two-wheelers, which he described as a reflection of the improved safety environment in the city.
The Mayor also stated that Thoothukudi once had only three parks, but the number has now increased to 53 with the development of new parks. A special park exclusively for women has been established near V.O.C. College under the Namakku Naame scheme based on the suggestion of Member of Parliament Kanimozhi. Facilities such as yoga, gym and dance classes are being conducted there.
He further pointed out that all 21 schools functioning under the Municipal Corporation are headed by women headmistresses.
Among the 67 newly appointed corporation employees, a majority are women, which he described as a significant step towards women’s empowerment.
Encouraging women to work with determination and confidence, the Mayor said they are capable of achieving anything.
He also urged residents to make use of the parks and playgrounds developed by the corporation to maintain good health and appealed to the public to cooperate in transforming Thoothukudi into a pollution-free city.
Later, the Mayor cut a cake and distributed it to the participants. During the event, Primary Health Centre Medical Officer Selva Sundara Vinojin spoke about women’s health, Bank Manager Rathinavalli addressed financial awareness, and Sivija delivered an awareness talk on laws related to women.
Zonal Chairpersons Kalaichelvi and Annalakshmi, City Welfare Officer Sankaramani, Assistant Executive Engineers Muneer Ahmed and Rajesh Kanna, along with corporation officials, councillors and sanitation workers attended the function. Health Inspector Azhagulakshmi delivered the vote of thanks.
