An elderly woman was brutally attacked by a masked gang who broke into her house and robbed 38 sovereigns of gold jewellery at Valikandapuram village near Mangalamedu in Perambalur district in the early hours of Friday.
Darabi, 65, wife of Syed Khan, was sleeping alone in the ground floor of her house while other family members were asleep in an upstairs room when the incident occurred. Police said four unidentified persons wearing masks entered the house around 1.30 a.m. after climbing over the rear compound wall.
The gang allegedly attacked the woman with an iron crowbar and other weapons while she was asleep.
The assailants then snatched the gold chain she was wearing and broke open a cupboard in the house and decamped with about 38 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
In the morning, when Darabi did not come out of the room for a long time, her husband and relatives became suspicious and knocked on the door.
As there was no response, they broke open the door and found her lying in a pool of blood.
She was immediately rescued and taken to the Perambalur Government Hospital for treatment.
Mangalamedu police rushed to the spot and registered a case. Police have launched a search for the four masked robbers and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the culprits.
The incident has created panic among residents of the locality.
