The death of Manamadurai youth Akash has triggered widespread controversy in Tamil Nadu after the post-mortem report revealed multiple injuries on his body, raising serious allegations of custodial assault.
Akash was arrested by police in connection with an alleged machete attack on two persons in the Manamadurai area of Sivaganga district.
Police initially stated that he sustained injuries while attempting to escape from custody and fell from a bridge, resulting in a fracture to his leg.
He was admitted to hospital and later shifted to another facility for further treatment.
Police had earlier claimed that Akash died due to suffocation during treatment. However, the explanation drew strong criticism from the family and the public.
Akash’s parents and relatives alleged that he was beaten to death in police custody and staged protests demanding justice.
The incident soon gained widespread attention across the State.
The matter also came under judicial scrutiny, and the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court ordered a post-mortem examination.
According to the autopsy report released subsequently, Akash had sustained injuries in 28 places on his body. The report also noted a fracture in the middle portion of his right leg and evidence of bleeding in the brain.
The findings have intensified allegations that the youth may have died due to assault, prompting calls from various quarters for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
