A 22-year-old farmer from Nilgiris district gave a new lease of life to seven persons through organ donation after being declared brain dead at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH), Coimbatore.
Monickraj sustained severe injuries in an accident involving an electric motor while irrigating his fields around 8.45 a.m. on March 11. He was first taken to a nearby private hospital for first aid and later shifted to KMCH on Avanashi Road in Coimbatore for specialized treatment. Despite intensive care, he did not respond to treatment and was declared brain dead on March 13.
In a generous gesture, his father Ramakrishnan, mother Vijayakumari and sister Monisha consented to donate his organs.
Following the procedures prescribed by the Transplant Authority of the Government of Tamil Nadu, the multi-organ transplant team harvested the lungs, liver, kidneys and eyes. The liver and one kidney were transplanted at KMCH, while another kidney and the eyes were sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore. The lungs were transported to a private hospital in Chennai.
The donated organs helped save and improve the lives of seven patients.
Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman of KMCH, thanked the family for their courageous and timely decision to donate the organs and said the noble gesture would create greater awareness about organ donation.
