Rajammal Devadas memorial day observed with reverence at Avinashilingam Institute

The 24th Memorial Day of Rajammal P. Devadas was observed with solemnity and reverence at Avinashilingam Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women on Monday.
T.S.K. Meenakshisundaram, Managing Trustee of Avinashilingam Trust Institutions and Chancellor of the institute, in his presidential address highlighted the importance of women’s education and empowerment, recalling the visionary contributions of Rajammal Devadas. He underscored her lifelong mission to promote academic excellence among women.


R. Annapoorani, former Professor of Economics and President of the Avinashilingam Institute Alumni Association, delivered the special address. She reflected on the cultural and emotional significance of the term “Amma,” closely associated with Rajammal Devadas, describing her as a symbol of compassion, wisdom and nurturing leadership. Sharing her personal experiences, she said Devadas reached great heights through unwavering faith, commitment to education and deep concern for people. She also highlighted her administrative leadership, policy contributions in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Social Welfare and Integrated Child Development Services, and her recognition with the Padma Shri in 1998 along with several awards and honorary doctorates.
V. Bharathi Harishankar, Vice-Chancellor of the institute, emphasized the lasting legacy of Rajammal Devadas in shaping the institution. She noted that her visionary leadership laid a strong foundation for academic autonomy and institutional growth. She added that Devadas always placed the institution above all else and worked selflessly without ego to elevate it to greater heights.
H. Indu, Registrar of the institute, proposed the vote of thanks.
