Unidentified persons broke into a house located behind the District Superintendent of Police office in Pudukkottai and decamped with 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery.
Police said the house belongs to Saravanan, who runs a salon and beauty parlour in the town.
He was admitted to the Pudukkottai Government Medical College Hospital after suffering a heart attack two days ago and is undergoing treatment.
With his wife attending to him at the hospital and children staying with relatives, the house in Kaliep Nagar was locked.
On Friday morning, neighbours noticed that the lock had been broken and alerted the family.
When they arrived, they found the door forced open and the bureau locker broken. Gold jewellery weighing about 30 sovereigns was found missing.
The burglars had also left behind tools, including an iron rod and a broken door handle, inside the house.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
The incident has caused concern among residents as the burglary occurred close to the Superintendent of Police office.
