Senior politician A.P. Kamalammal, 96, ended a six-decade-long association with the Congress and joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam led by Vijay ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Kamalammal formally joined the party at its headquarters in Panaiyur, Chennai, in the presence of Vijay. The move has drawn attention in political circles, given her long-standing association with the Congress spanning nearly 60 years.
Sources said the decision reflects shifting political alignments in the State in the run-up to the Assembly polls.
Earlier, former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee General Secretary T. Selvam had also joined Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam after being removed from the Congress.
The latest induction is seen as part of the party’s efforts to strengthen its base by bringing in experienced political figures.
