Tension prevailed at a public meeting in Ayanavaram after a liquor bottle was hurled into the gathering, injuring a woman and causing panic among attendees.
The meeting was organised by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam as part of its campaign for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party, led by actor Vijay, is contesting for the first time and has fielded candidates in all 234 constituencies.
Aadhav Arjuna, the party’s candidate from Villivakkam, had convened the meeting to seek votes. During the event, when party leader Nanjil Sampath was addressing the gathering, a liquor bottle suddenly landed in the crowd, injuring a woman who was immediately rushed to hospital.
Police said preliminary investigation revealed that the bottle was not deliberately targeted at the meeting. Two persons staying in a nearby hostel were allegedly intoxicated and involved in a quarrel, during which they threw bottles at each other. One of the bottles accidentally fell into the meeting venue.
Both individuals have been arrested and are being interrogated, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
Reacting to the incident, Aadhav Arjuna said his immediate priority was to visit the injured woman in hospital and ascertain her condition.
The incident created a brief commotion but the meeting resumed later under police supervision.
