Gold, diamond and silver jewellery worth Rs. 9.47 crore was seized during a vehicle inspection in Mudukulathur constituency of Ramanathapuram district for lack of valid documents.
Election flying squads led by Constituency Election Standing Committee Officer Rajeswaran conducted checks at the Kannirajapuram check post on the East Coast Road near Sayalgudi on Saturday night.
During the operation, a car arriving via the Thoothukudi route was intercepted. The driver, Raja, 36, son of Selvakumar from Harvipatti near Thiruparankundram in Madurai district, was questioned.
Upon inspection, officials found 18 boxes containing gold, diamond and silver jewellery inside the vehicle. Raja claimed that the valuables belonged to a private company in Madurai and were being transported based on an order.
As he failed to produce valid documents for the consignment, the jewellery was seized by officials and later handed over to Mudukulathur Deputy Tahsildar Rajkumar for further action.
