Senior IPS officer Abin Dinesh Modak has been appointed as the new Chennai Police Commissioner following the transfer of incumbent Commissioner Arun, who has not been assigned a new posting.
The appointment comes amid a large-scale reshuffle of IAS and IPS officers in Tamil Nadu ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. Chief Secretary Muruganantham has been transferred and replaced by Sai Kumar, while acting Director General of Police Venkataraman has been succeeded by Sandeep Rai Rathore as the State’s DGP.
Similarly, Anti-Corruption Bureau Director Davidson Devasirvatham has been replaced by Sandeep Mittal. Transfers have also been effected in key positions including Madurai and Tambaram Police Commissioners, the Western Zone Inspector General, and eight district Superintendents of Police.
Abin Dinesh Modak, who previously served as Additional Director General in the Enforcement Directorate and as Tambaram Police Commissioner, assumed charge at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office on Friday night.
A native of Nagpur in Maharashtra, Modak holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering and joined the Indian Police Service in 1997. He is known for his administrative efficiency and integrity during his tenure in various postings.
He is married and has two children. His daughter is a tennis player, while his son is pursuing higher secondary education. His brother is also an IPS officer serving in Maharashtra.
