Flying squad officials seized gold and silver jewellery worth around Rs. 29 crore during an election surveillance raid in Chennai ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.
With political campaigning in full swing, election monitoring teams have intensified checks across the State to curb illegal movement of cash and valuables.
In this context, the flying squad of the Thousand Lights Assembly constituency conducted a vehicle check in T. Nagar, during which they intercepted jewellery being transported without valid documents.
Officials seized gold jewellery worth Rs. 28.54 crore and silver articles valued at around Rs. 60 lakh.
Though it was claimed that the valuables were being transported to jewellery shops, authorities found a lack of proper documentation. The seized items were subsequently handed over to the Income Tax Department officials in Nungambakkam for further investigation.
