Fishing ban imposed in Tamil Nadu from April 15 to protect marine life

A 61-day annual fishing ban will come into force in the eastern coastal areas of Tamil Nadu from April 15, aimed at protecting marine resources during the breeding season.
According to District Collector P. Priyanka Pankajam, the ban has been imposed under the Tamil Nadu Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, prohibiting fishing using mechanised boats and trawlers until June 14.
The restriction applies to all power boats and trawlers, while traditional fishing vessels are exempted from the ban.
Boat owners have been instructed to ensure that all mechanised vessels that ventured into the sea return to their registered berths before midnight on April 14.
Officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against those violating the ban by engaging in fishing activities during the restricted period.
The annual measure is intended to support fish breeding and ensure the sustainability of marine resources along the State’s eastern coastline.
