BJP State President and Sattur Assembly constituency candidate Nainar Nagendran on April 21, 2026 assured that he would take up the issue of compensation for victims of the firecracker factory explosion in Virudhunagar with the Election Commission and the Central Government.
According to reports, 25 persons were killed and five others injured in the explosion at a fireworks unit near Virudhunagar. During subsequent rescue operations, 12 personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services and police were also injured in a secondary blast.
Nainar Nagendran visited the injured undergoing treatment at the Government Hospital in Virudhunagar and conveyed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
Speaking to reporters, he said that such accidents were occurring frequently in Sattur and Sivakasi regions and stressed that stringent measures must be taken by the government to prevent recurrence. He also called for enhanced compensation for the victims.
He pointed out that illegal manufacturing of firecrackers, allegedly with political backing, was a key factor behind such incidents and emphasised that strict action must be taken irrespective of political affiliations.
Stating that safety should be a shared responsibility, he urged both factory owners and workers to exercise caution and adhere to safety norms.
Nainar Nagendran said he would raise the issue with the Election Commission and the Central Government to ensure adequate relief and compensation for those affected by the tragedy.
