An elderly fruit vendor was allegedly cheated by a woman using a fake Rs 500 note while purchasing mangoes in the Thiruvottiyur market area of Chennai, triggering sympathy and outrage after a video of the incident went viral.
Jayalakshmi, a resident of Arambakkam, has been running a roadside fruit stall for over 35 years, selling seasonal fruits. With the onset of the mango season, she had stocked up on mangoes for sale.
According to reports, a woman customer bought mangoes worth Rs 150 and handed over what appeared to be a Rs 500 note. After receiving the balance amount, she left the spot. Later, when Jayalakshmi examined the note, she grew suspicious and showed it to others nearby, only to realise that it was a fake dummy note typically used by children.
The elderly vendor, already battling health issues and managing the business alone after the death of her husband, was left distraught by the incident.
With most of her earnings going towards medical expenses, the loss deeply affected her.
The incident, captured on video, has been widely shared on social media, drawing calls for strict action against the accused woman.
Police have begun examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspect and take appropriate action.
