The Supreme Court on Monday set aside the Madras High Court order acquitting all nine accused in the 2013 murder case of Chennai-based neurologist Dr. P. Subbiah and restored the life imprisonment awarded to the convicts.
The Tamil Nadu government had challenged the Madras High Court verdict delivered in June 2024, which acquitted all the accused in the sensational murder case.
After hearing the appeal, the Supreme Court had reserved its verdict. Delivering the judgment today, the apex court overturned the acquittal order and directed all the convicted persons in the case to undergo life imprisonment. The Supreme Court also ordered all the accused, except Ponnusamy and Mary Pushpam, to surrender immediately before the authorities.
Taking note of the advanced age of Ponnusamy and Mary Pushpam, the court observed that they were allegedly involved in the case at the instigation of their sons.
The apex court permitted them to submit a mercy petition to the Governor seeking commutation of sentence and stayed the operation of their sentence until a decision is taken on the plea.
