A 19-year-old college student from Coimbatore, who was declared brain dead following a road accident, gave a new lease of life to five persons through organ donation.
The deceased was identified as Sangeeth, son of Rajkumar and Sabitha of Rakipalayam on Mettupalayam Road in Coimbatore district.
Hospital sources said Sangeeth met with an accident near Thoppampatti in the early hours of May 16. He was initially admitted to a nearby private hospital for first aid and later shifted to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) on Avinashi Road for advanced treatment.
Despite intensive medical care, he did not respond to treatment and was declared brain dead on May 18. In a noble gesture, his parents consented to donate his organs to save the lives of others.
A team of multi-organ transplant surgeons at KMCH harvested the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver in accordance with the guidelines of the Tamil Nadu Transplant Authority.
The kidneys and liver were transplanted at KMCH, while the heart and lungs were transported to a private hospital in Chennai for transplantation. KMCH Chairman Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami appreciated the family for their courageous and timely decision to donate the organs of their son. He said the gesture would help create greater awareness about the importance of organ donation and inspire many others to come forward for the noble cause.
