Rajya Sabha By-Election in Tamil Nadu on June 18

The Election Commission of India on Friday announced that the by-election to a vacant Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu will be held on June 18.
The vacancy arose after AIADMK leader C.Ve. Shanmugam resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership following his victory from the Mailam Assembly constituency in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly election.
According to the election schedule released by the Commission, filing of nominations will begin on June 1, while June 11 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. If more than one candidate files nomination, polling will be conducted on June 18 and the results will be declared the same evening.
With Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerging as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the candidate fielded by the party is expected to secure victory in the Rajya Sabha by-election.
The Election Commission also announced a by-election to a Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra following the resignation of Nationalist Congress Party leader Sunetra Ajit Pawar.
In addition, elections are scheduled to be held on June 18 for 24 Rajya Sabha seats from 10 States, where the terms of sitting members are set to expire.
