Cycle rally held against drugs and for women safety

A cycle rally creating awareness against drug abuse and stressing the safety of women and girl children was organised in Coimbatore ahead of World Bicycle Day.
Observed annually on June 3, World Bicycle Day was marked in the city with the participation of children, women and social activists. The rally highlighted the need to eradicate drug culture in Tamil Nadu and promote the safety of women and girl children.
The awareness rally was flagged off by Sub-Collector Haripriya and Deputy Superintendent of Police Gayathri, who also took part in the event.
Speaking on the occasion, cyclist and social activist Vishnu Ram said drug abuse causes severe physical and mental harm to users and also creates negative impacts on society.
He said the spread of narcotics culture affects the safety and security of women and girl children. He stressed that men in society should act as protectors of women and actively participate in preventing drug abuse.
He also urged youngsters to develop interest in sports and disciplined activities to help build a healthy society free from drugs and violence.
The rally commenced from Nava India area in Coimbatore, proceeded up to Karumathampatti and returned to the starting point. Participants covered a distance of nearly 50 kilometres during the event.
Medals were distributed to participants in recognition of their involvement in the awareness rally.
