YouTuber Maridhas was arrested by the Cyber Crime Wing on Monday from his residence in Madurai following complaints lodged by members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
According to sources, TVK functionaries had accused Maridhas of spreading alleged misinformation and making false allegations through content, including the use of AI-generated images on social media platforms.
A team of Cyber Crime Police from Chennai arrived in Madurai and took Maridhas into custody. The YouTuber later confirmed his arrest through a post on his social media platform X.
Police sources said Maridhas is likely to be brought to Chennai for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. However, officials have not yet released detailed information regarding the specific charges or sections under which he was arrested.
The arrest has triggered political reactions, with leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) criticising the police action and expressing concern over the development.
The incident comes days after the arrest of James Raja from Palayamkottai for allegedly posting content critical of the ruling party.
Further details regarding the case are expected to emerge after the completion of preliminary investigations by the Cyber Crime authorities.
