Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday met Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi ahead of the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting scheduled to be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Vijay arrived in the national capital from Chennai in the morning to participate in the high-level meeting, which will be attended by Chief Ministers from across the country.
The meeting between Vijay and the Congress leadership took place at Sonia Gandhi’s residence in New Delhi. The interaction assumes significance as the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led government in Tamil Nadu was formed with the support of its post-election alliance partners, including the Congress.
Political observers viewed the meeting as an important engagement between the ruling alliance partners at the national level. Though details of the discussions were not officially disclosed, the leaders are understood to have exchanged views on political developments and matters of mutual interest.
This marks Vijay’s second visit to New Delhi as Chief Minister. During his previous visit, he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed issues concerning Tamil Nadu.
The meeting with Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi has drawn considerable attention in political circles ahead of the NITI Aayog meeting, where key development and policy issues are expected to be discussed between the Centre and the States.
