EPS urges TVK Government to open Mettur dam for Kuruvai Cultivation

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has urged the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government to take immediate steps to release water from the Mettur Dam, citing the concerns of farmers dependent on Kuruvai cultivation in the Cauvery Delta region.
In a statement posted on social media, Palaniswami said the failure to open the dam on June 12, the traditional date for water release, had caused anxiety among farmers.
He noted that Kuruvai cultivation largely depends on the timely release of Cauvery water from the Mettur reservoir.
Criticising the State government, the AIADMK leader alleged that farmers were already facing hardships due to unresolved agricultural loan issues and inadequate support measures.
He claimed that the recently announced Kuruvai special package worth Rs 134 crore would not serve its purpose without ensuring sufficient water for cultivation.
Palaniswami also raised concerns over power supply for agriculture, alleging that farmers were facing difficulties in operating pump sets due to power-related issues.
Emphasising the importance of agriculture to the State’s economy and rural livelihoods, he called upon the government to recognise the urgency of the situation and take all necessary measures to release water from the Mettur Dam and ensure it reaches tail-end regions in the delta districts.
The opening of the Mettur Dam remains a key issue for farmers as they prepare for the Kuruvai cultivation season.
