The Tamil Nadu government is planning to introduce a machine–based system for collecting empty liquor bottles at TASMAC outlets as part of efforts to streamline the bottle return scheme and reduce the workload of employees.
Under the existing scheme, customers pay a refundable deposit of Rs.10 per bottle while purchasing liquor. The amount is returned when the empty bottle is handed back at the same outlet or an authorised collection centre.
The move comes after objections were raised over TASMAC employees handling the collection process. During proceedings before the Madras High Court, the State government had informed that the scheme would be restructured and alternative methods, including the involvement of persons other than TASMAC staff, were being considered.
According to sources, a dedicated bottle–return machine has already been tested at a TASMAC warehouse in Ambattur. Based on the trial results, officials are reportedly planning to install the machines in TASMAC outlets across the State in phases, making the return process more efficient and convenient for consumers.
