A deeply moving incident has left residents of Thanjavur in grief after a woman died from shock and distress shortly after learning of her husband’s death, bringing an end to their 45-year-long marital journey.
Selvaraj, 70, of Tholkappiyar Square, Mothirappa Chavadi, had been living with a disability for nearly 25 years after losing part of his leg due to complications arising from an untreated injury. His wife Chitra, 61, devotedly cared for him throughout the years, foregoing personal comforts to support her husband.
A few days ago, Selvaraj suffered a heart attack and was admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Doctors advised angioplasty, and the family consented to the procedure. However, despite treatment, Selvaraj passed away.
The sudden loss devastated Chitra, who had stood by her husband through decades of hardship. Unable to cope with the grief, she collapsed at home and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
The bodies of Selvaraj and Chitra were placed side by side for public homage, leaving relatives and neighbours heartbroken. Family members said the couple, who had shared an inseparable bond for 45 years, remained united even in death. Their passing has cast a pall of sorrow over the locality.
