Bharatanatyam movements bring Mathematics to life in Dr. Janani Suresh Ram’s new book

A new educational book titled “Move Through Math”, which introduces mathematical concepts through Bharatanatyam movements, rhythm, gestures and play-based learning, was released in Coimbatore. The book presents an innovative approach that enables children to experience mathematics through movement rather than relying only on numbers and symbols.
Dr. Janani Suresh Ram, a Germany-based mechanical engineer, Bharatanatyam artist and researcher, has spent the past several years exploring the intersection of mathematics, dance and embodied learning. The newly released handbook is the outcome of her long-term research in this field.
Drawing inspiration from the rich movement vocabulary of Bharatanatyam, the book introduces fundamental mathematical concepts through movement-based activities. It has been specially designed for educators, parents, mentors and children between the ages of five and ten. The nine-chapter book explains 46 foundational mathematical concepts, including shapes, pattern formation, number sense, mathematical operations, measurement, data analysis and spatial-temporal awareness, in a simple and engaging manner.
The publication is based on workshops conducted in India and Germany, along with Dr. Janani Suresh Ram’s continued research and contributions to embodied movement and learning. The book offers a fresh perspective on developing a strong foundation for mathematical thinking among children.
The book was released at a function held at the Coimbatore Cosmopolitan Club by renowned artist and thinker Radhe Jaggi and educationist Dr. Manimekalai Mohan. Earlier, Kalamamani Lavanya Shankar delivered the welcome address. Smrithi Rekha Adinarayanan, Co-founder and Researcher of Ananthi Foundation, delivered the felicitation address.
