Elderly couple bludgeoned to death near Omalur

Police have launched an intensive investigation after an elderly couple were allegedly bludgeoned to death and their jewellery stolen near Omalur in Salem district.
The victims, Jayaraman and Amaravathi, residents of Gundukal in Kadayampatti near Omalur, had been living alone. They are survived by two sons and two daughters, all of whom are married and live separately.
Their younger son used to provide them with food regularly. On Monday night, their grandson, Navaneethan, went to the house to deliver food. On entering the house, he found his grandparents lying dead and immediately alerted his parents, who informed the police.
Senior police officials, including the Salem Range Deputy Inspector General of Police, the Salem District Superintendent of Police and other officers, rushed to the spot and conducted an investigation.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the earrings and nose ornaments worn by Amaravathi had been forcibly removed and stolen, indicating that the murders were committed for jewellery.
The bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem examination. Police have formed special teams to trace the culprits and are continuing their investigation.
The murder of the elderly couple, who were living alone, has created shock and tension in the locality. The incident has also raised concerns over crimes targeting senior citizens for jewellery in Salem district.
