Police have resumed bicycle patrols on the Chithirai streets surrounding the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai after nearly 50 years.
Thousands of devotees from across India and abroad visit the world-famous temple every day. The East, West, South and North Chithirai streets around the temple witness heavy movement of devotees and the public.
Entry of two-wheelers into the Chithirai streets has been restricted. Police personnel have been deployed to monitor the restriction and provide guidance to devotees visiting the temple.
As part of the arrangements, the bicycle patrol system that was in use around five decades ago has been revived. More than five bicycles have initially been brought into service, and police personnel are carrying out regular patrols in the temple streets.
The bicycle patrol enables police personnel to monitor the busy streets more effectively while guiding devotees and the public without causing inconvenience. The initiative has received a positive response from local residents.
