A book fair organised jointly by The Chennai Silks and the Tamil Nadu Booksellers’ Association began at The Chennai Silks premises in Thoothukudi on Wednesday.
The fair will be held from August 27 to September 6 and will remain open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Around 10 lakh books covering one lakh titles are on display across categories including literature, novels, science, competitive examinations, biographies, medicine and sports.
Competitions for school students, including drawing, essay writing, Thirukkural writing and story writing, will be conducted daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Visitors can avail themselves of a 10 per cent discount on all books purchased at the fair. Those purchasing books worth more than Rs. 1,000 will receive a Vasippu Semmal certificate, while those purchasing books worth more than Rs. 2,000 will receive a Vasippu Sigaram certificate.
Thoothukudi Corporation Commissioner Priyanka presided over the inaugural function. Thoothukudi The Chennai Silks Manager Pandi and Tamil Nadu Booksellers’ Association President Ravivarma were present as guests of honour. Association Secretary Karthik welcomed the gathering.
Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periasamy, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the fair by cutting the ribbon and launched the first sale. Selvam, Manager of The Chennai Silks, made the first purchase.
Tamil Nadu Booksellers’ Association Vice-President Rajapandi proposed the vote of thanks.
