The DMK has increased the number of its organisational districts from 77 to 110 as part of a major restructuring exercise, party president M.K. Stalin announced on Friday.
In a statement, Stalin said the decision followed key resolutions adopted at the party’s executive committee meeting held on August 22. The resolutions were aimed at strengthening and reorganising the party structure.
Stalin said the party had conducted organisational elections 15 times since its formation and would now proceed with its 16th organisational election. Several organisational changes have also been approved as part of the exercise.
Under the new arrangement, Tamil Nadu’s Assembly constituencies have been divided into 110 organisational districts based on recommendations of the party’s reorganisation committee and consultations with senior functionaries. The Sholinganallur Assembly constituency has been made a separate organisational district citing its large population.
The existing district secretaries have been directed to convene district executive committee meetings in the presence of representatives deputed by the party headquarters. They have been asked to submit recommendations within 15 days for reorganising the town, union, area, town panchayat, ward and branch-level structures.
The new organisational units are to be formed in accordance with the resolutions adopted by the executive committee and the guidelines issued by the party’s reorganisation committee.
